Guest posting on other people’s website is an excellent way to get in front of an established audience and one of the quickest ways you can start growing your website traffic.
If you’re a newer online business owner, guest posting can be a fantastic way to establish your credibility with your ideal audience who may not know you exist.

Define your purpose behind guest posting
Before we dive in to pitch ourselves for guest posts, we need to define our purpose first. The purpose behind guest posting should line up with your overall goals for your business.
If driving new traffic to your website is one of your top goals for your business, guest posting is a great way to do that!
Maybe your goal is to boost your SEO rankings for your website. That’s another stellar reason to consider doing guest posting.
Or perhaps you have a new offering that’s coming out soon and you want to get the word out through guest posting. That’s a wonderful reason to guest post.
We want to make sure we’re crystal clear on the reason behind why we’re guest posting before we start pitches ourselves silly. Knowing the purpose behind doing something helps us track our efforts and success so we can know what works and what doesn’t!

Identify what topics you want to be known for
Now that we’ve defined our purpose, we can start identifying what you want to be known for!
When reaching out to other websites for guest posts, typically the website owner wants to be sure that you’re an expert in whatever it is that you’re writing about. You’re asking for coveted space on their website and they want to trust that you know what you’re talking about.
But, none of this matters if it doesn’t tie directly into your offerings.
So before we get to pitching our favorite sites, write down topics that you want to be known for in your industry and how it relates to your products/services you offer.
For example, I want to be known as a PR expert. Topics I can write about include:
- Pitching to podcasts
- Landing mentions in online publications
- Working with influencers
- Guest posting — ha! 🙂

Observe the websites you want to guest post for
Okay, okay, we’re almost to the pitching part but before we start reaching out for any guest posting opportunities, we need to do a little research!
If you don’t already, you should have a clear idea of who your target audience is and what websites they read.
These are the websites you should research and start observing before you pitch.
The reason why you want to follow the websites you want to pitch is we want to take note of what type of content they write for their site. Also, it gives you time to know if they even accept guest posts!
Now how does the topics you can write about line up with the content they share on their site?
Once you figure that out, that’s when you know what to pitch!

Woohooooo we made it to pitch time!
So, you know your purpose, you nailed down the topics you want to be known for, and you researched the places you want to pitch.
Now it’s time to send that email!
Here’s what to include in your pitch email:
- An introduction to who you are, what you do, and who you help
- Topics you can write about
- A brief bio
- Links to your website & social media handles
Remember, you’re speaking to another human being, so don’t sound robotic in your email (but don’t be too casual, unless that’s your thing!)
