We know that behind every small business is a small business owner.

And Bluchic is no different…in fact, there are two of us!

But we often get so caught up in developing our themes, creating content, and generally running our business that we forget to show ourselves to our audience.

So we thought it was about time that we said “Hello”.

Who We Are

We’re Andrew and Kathie; a developer/designer, coder/marketer, husband/wife team. We’re college-sweethearts and Graphic Design and Advertising graduates with a passion for web design.

Andrew is the face behind the coding part of things (he builds the websites), while I (Kathie) tackle the design elements. You might have noticed that I also write the blog content too!

We create gorgeous premium WordPress themes that are chic, feminine, and designed with specific creative niches in mind, for female business owners just like you!

How Bluchic Began

Andrew gifted me my own domain during our final year of college in 2006 and I began my blogging journey on a self-hosted WordPress site. I often think of this little gift as my big life-changing moment.

The only problem was that I was constantly searching for a chic theme that was the right fit for me and my style.

Being a perfectionist and a designer, I found myself changing the look of my blog on almost a weekly basis instead of creating content for my blog.

In 2008, mostly out of frustration, I had the idea to just design my own. With my graphic design background and Andrew’s knowledge of coding, it was sure to be the perfect match!

Even though my first few mockups still make us giggle, that was the turning point in our journey into web design.

We started freelancing together soon after, working mainly with female entrepreneurs and blogs in the wedding industry because of my chic design style.

I then took the plunge to leave my 9 to 5 job as a graphic designer and began working full-time on our web design business, while Andrew juggled his full-time web developer job and his role in our business.

Oh, and all this while we were in a long-distance relationship!

We happily tied the knot in 2009 and Andrew and I finally got to share the same postcode. He quitted his 9 to 5 and we worked 1:1 with web design clients around the world.

Things were going great but I began to realize that there were quite a few potential clients who were not in the space to sign up for custom website design just yet.

And, they still faced the same problem as other business owners.

They were trying to find the perfect theme that fits their business and personal style, whilst still looking chic and professional.

But there was a very limited choice of a beautiful, professional WordPress theme for female entrepreneurs back then.

And that’s when our Bluchic idea was born!

As for the brand name? Bluchic came to mind as we wanted something short and oh-so-chic like my design style.

Bluchic And What We Believe

In January 2012, we celebrated the official launch of Bluchic with two designs: Magdalena and Le Breindel which were both available as themes, business cards, and social media sets.

We launched with several creative doubts and lots of questioning our own ideas, along with an imperfect website.

But we believe that done is better than perfect and we just needed to start.

At Bluchic, we are dedicated to creating designs that are chic, feminine and, most importantly, easy to use and customize.

We know what it’s like to work through creative doubt and the delay this can cause before a business launch.

And, we also know how frustrating it can be when you want to refresh your website’s design with a new theme and you have to put your website into maintenance mode!

That’s why we have designed our themes to be quick to set up and customize, meaning your site will be down for a minimal amount of time.

Our chic, feminine designs are for the girl bosses, female entrepreneurs who want to launch a beautiful site in a short amount of time, without the frustration of searching for the perfect theme that doesn’t require you to know coding to make it look just like the demo.

Three Fun Facts About The Bluchic Co-founders

 1. He’s all code and she’s all design.
We both have a degree in Advertising and Graphic Design, with a background in the advertising world before making our move to web design.

Andrew builds the websites while I design the visuals. Together we’re the team that will help you with all-important style decisions, as well as post-purchase tech support.

 2. Opposite attracts
Andrew loves coffee, I love cocoa! ☕️
I’m an early riser, Andrew is a night owl! 🦉
Andrew is a skyscraper that’s great at the bigger vision, I’m a builder type who plans all the details
He’s a “Let’s do it!” person because done is better than perfect and I’m a “Let’s think it through !” kind of person!

 3. IKEA is our happy place
We love the overall concept of the business and the simplicity of the furniture. Our friends call our house an IKEA show-house. We love IKEA so much that we use their brand to describe how our pre-made themes and setup works:

“Setting up your WordPress theme is a lot like buying IKEA furniture (stay with me here). When you walk into IKEA, you see the beautiful, decorated spaces and put-together furniture. What you don’t see is all of the work that goes into putting those spaces and furniture together.

When you purchase the IKEA furniture, you still have to take it home and follow the instructions to put it together. It’s exactly the same with WordPress themes.

Many people purchase themes, expecting it to look exactly like the demo site from the beginning. But just like IKEA furniture, you have to follow the step-by-step instructions before your theme will look like the demo.

However, we’ve made sure that setting up your Bluchic theme is way much easier than putting together IKEA furniture. Our instructions are easy to follow and our customers love how easy it is to set up our themes.”

1. Our themes are easy to use and install. You won’t need specific coding experience to get your Bluchic site up and running, perhaps just a bit of a DIY attitude and willingness to learn.

2. Once you’ve decided on a theme to purchase, you’ll most likely find you’ll want to customize it to fit your branding. It’s very easy to get lost in this step. Try to stick to your brand guide and not get caught up in constant comparison and changes.
